Goodbye 2024, Hello 2025: A Reflective Journey

As I reflect on the close of 2024, I am met with a swirl of emotions—sorrow, loss, and glimpses of hope—shaped by the struggles I faced this past year. Living with a chronic illness kept me from work, and I had to grapple with the profound losses of my uncle and my mother. Each memory is a bittersweet reminder of shared moments that now feel more precious than ever.

On a broader scale, the political landscape around the world has shifted dramatically. The outcomes of countless democratic elections have left many in disbelief. In the UK, the once-celebrated transition from Conservative to Labour has given way to feelings of regret among the populace. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the rise of the right-wing PVV party has caused much ado within the more traditional political parties. Despite the elections having been held only a year ago, there is already widespread discontent with the current coalition government. Equally, Germany and France have seen a rise in popularity of ring wing parties and have had to deal with leadership issues. The chaos seen in Eastern Europe and the polarization of American politics contribute to the signals of a troubling global pattern.

What does this say about our global political landscape?”

Firstly, the governments responsible for managing the pandemic’s economic fallout faced substantial loss of public support. It sends a signal to parties in government that taking care of business isn’t enough. They have to do it without burdening the populace in any way, shape, or form. Additionally, with each election cycle, and between the cycles, we bear witness to a deeper fracture in society—one fueled by the pervasive influence of social media, where algorithms shape our perceptions as much as any politician’s speech.

As we step into 2025, I invite us all to consider how we can foster meaningful discussion and debate while upholding respect, dignity, and good faith. After all, life is too short to dwell only in darkness. Let’s make this year not just about recognizing our struggles but also celebrating the love, grace, kindness, and camaraderie that bind us together.

Let’s embrace 2025 as a year of renewal—inviting each of us to contribute to a kinder, brighter world.
